John and Frances Canning have the photos to prove it. They had planned their wedding for the Manchester Town Hall in northern England for March 23. On learning that Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Phillip, would be nearby, the bride-to-be sent an invitation on a whim to Buckingham Palace inviting the queen plus a guest to attend the party. The queen politely declined, but then told her office to plan a surprise for the newlyweds. Then the royal couple showed up as unexpected guests and stayed long enough to be in the wedding photos. “She said I looked lovely and she wanted to wish us all the best for the future,” Frances Canning told The Sun.
